3/4 B’s holidays

3/4B have just got back from school holidays.   The school holidays went from 28th of March to 14th of April.  The reason why we finished on Thursday was because the next day was Good Friday.

At the start of the school holidays it was Easter.  We all enjoyed Easter and Easter Bunny found us!  Most of us even had an Easter egg hunt and we found a lot of Easter eggs.

Some of the activities we did during the holidays were:

  • visiting family;
  • played video games;
  • celebrated our birthdays;
  • went to the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground);
  • went to the circus;
  • going to the movies to see The Croods, Jurassic Park and Oz the Great and Powerful;
  • visiting family in other places.

We all had a fantastic time.

Beach Day

“At the beach we went in the rockpools.  All the kids were getting wet beause they were in the water.  We found some sea animals and we made some animals out of sand.  We had playlunch and it was HOT AS so we had a drink of water.  I enjoyed the day at the beach because it was fun to be with my friends.  When we got back to school we had an icypole and I was cold.”

On Tuesday FEPS went to Canadian Bay in Mount Eliza.  We go there every year to explore rockpools.  We try to find creatures and plants like seaweed, crabs and starfish.  I foound my first crab, but I never said it was alive. The beach day a few weeks ago got cancelled from cold weather but yesterday it was 37 degrees.  It felt nice standing in the water for a couple of minutes.

After exploring for about an hour and 45 minutes, we went to have some playlunch, then we went back to the bus.  When we got back to school we were lucky to have icypoles.  But when I got home I had a bad headache.

Beach day was fun apart from getting sand in my shoes.  It was giving me blisters.  Anyway, I still loved it.  I saw lots and lots of sea snails and alive and dead crabs.  It was really hot!.  It felt slippery on the rocks.  I slipped on one of the rocks and splashed!!  All of my clothes got wet.  When we got back to school we got ICYPOLES!

Parris Grade 3

On Tuesday 12th of March FEPS went to Canadian Bay in Mt Eliza.  We left at 9.30 to go to the beach.  The weather was extremely hot

When we got to Canadian Bay we got organised and then walked over to the rock pools.  There were lots of rockpools.  There were lots of sea animals like crabs, starfish and little eels.

My favourite part was when Ben showed me a giant cab bigger than my palm.  It was as big as!

We also had recess at Canadian Bay.  Then after we finished our food we went back on the bus back to school.

When we were back at school we had icypoles.  It was so refreshing.  I had so much fun.

Keanu Grade 4

On the 12th of March at 9.30am we went to the rockpools at Canadian Bay in Mt Eliza and I found a live crab that almost bit me.  I also found a black sea snail.  When we got back to school we got an icypole. My favourite part of the day was finding a crab.

Riley Grade 3

On Tuesday 12th March the whole school went to the beach.  We went to Canadian Bay, Mount Eliza.  At the beach it was 35 degrees, it was really HOT!  We travelled by bus.

We looked for sea creatures, some of the sea creatures were crabs, sea stars, shells and sea snails.  The whole school had a lot of fun.  Some of us had a look at the different types of seaweed.  Most of us dug our feet in the sand but it was very hot.  We ran across the boiling hot sand and splashed our feet in the nice refreshing water.We stopped and had a break and had some snack.  Then we had to go back to school.  When we got back to school we watched Finding Nemo and had icy poles.  I had an orange one.  They were yummy.

Basketball Clinic

On Thursday 28th February we had a basketball clinic.  The man who came to teach us was Chuck.  Chuck is a player for the Frankston Blues.  He came from 11.00 to 11.30 and played a few games with us.  The first game we played was a little bit weird, we had to stand in a circle and Chuck would throw the ball at us and if he said “drop it” we had to catch it and if he said “catch it” we had to drop it.  It was really hard but in the end we had our final two.  Our last two were Isobel and Jerell.  Chuck confused both of them but in the end we had our winner … Isobel.  After that we played another game.  Chuck called out 3 point line, half court, base line or side line and we had to run to them.  In the end Bethany and I were the last ones left and we were on the base line and Chuck called … BASE LINE.  I sprinted my butt off to the half court!!!

Nim’s Island Book Covers

After our Skype call with Wendy Orr yesterday, we have created our own book covers for Nim’s Island.  Wendy spoke to us about imagining how old Nim was and what she looked like.  She also told us there were a few different book covers for Nim’s Island from sales of the book around the world.  We decided to create our own.  Here is a selection of what some of us came up with.

Skyping Wendy Orr – Author of Nim’s Island

Today all the grade 3 and 4 students came into our Grade3/4 classroom for a very exciting event. We were going to meet and talk to a real author!

This term we have been reading Nim’s Island in class, and today we were lucky enough to Skype Wendy Orr the author of Nim’s Island and have a chat with her.

During our Skype call we discovered that Wendy originally got the idea for Nim’s Island from a story she started writing when she was in Grade 3! Her original story was about a girl who left an orphanage and went to live on an Island. Wendy has had to rewrite Nim’s Island about 14 times before it became the story we know it as now.

Wendy was very excited when she was approached to turn her book into a movie. She explained to us how when books get turned into movies some parts need to change a bit to make the movie exciting and to get across the message of the book. For example in Nim’s Island, Alex Rover the author, used to talk to herself, but in Nim’s Island the book, Alex Rover, the writer, had an imaginary friend, Alex Rover, the hero.

When the movie Nim’s Island was being made, Wendy loved meeting the seals who played Selkie in the movie. In fact Wendy’s favourite part of the movie is when Nim rides on Selkie’s back.

The sequel to Nim’s Island is called Nim at Sea. This book has also been turned into a movie called Return to Nim’s Island which will be out at the movies in April. Bindi Irwin plays Nim in this movie.

We cant wait to read Nim at Sea now, and Wendy Orr has become our favourite author!

We want to Skype our way around Australia

Mystery Skype Call

On Thursday 7 February we made a mystery skype call to another school.  We had to guess where they were from by asking closed questions that had a yes or a no answer.    We found out the school we were talking to were from Horsham West Primary School.

We asked them questions about their school and they asked us questions about our school.  We found out that at their school they had about 55 teachers, 8 playgrounds, and 550 students.  They had 24 classes.  Their school was a lot bigger than our school because we have 12 teachers, 3 playgrounds and and 195 kids.  We only have 9 classes.

We have decided to take photos of our schools and we will share them with each other.

We had loads of fun and hope to do another Mystery Skype again.

If you would like to have a Mystery Skype or a general  Skype with us please leave us a comment asking and our teacher will contact you to arrange it.

Have you ever done a Mystery Skype call before?

Paper Blogging

Last week we learned about what a blog looked like.  We learned about words like “Widgets” and “Vokis”.  We have been working on creating our own “Paper Blog”, while writing about something we did over the summer school holidays.  This activity required us to draft a piece of personal writing, edit it and type it.  We also had to design our blog’s appearance including drawing widgets down the sidebar.  After we “published” our blog we were able to comment on each others blogs.

What topics do you write about on your blogs?

Skype call to South Carolina USA.

On Wednesday the 12th of December 2012, both

3/4 grades got together and skyped a after

school care (study group is what it is called in

America). We skyped them once but they didn’t

answer us the first time so the second time we

called them and they answered us. 🙂

They asked us a few questions like-

Whats your favourite food? Alot of people said

lollies but tey didn’t know what lollies were,

because in America they call it candy.

Another question they asked was-

Whats your favourite celebration?

People said Christmas, Birthdays, Easter and

some said Australian day. 🙂

Another question they asked was Whats your

favourite Christmas food?

Some people said turkey some said candy canes.

And one last question they asked was where do

you live?

We said Australia, Melbourne and Frankston. 😀

After a few question we started to talk about our

Christmas carols. We told them that we have ours

and asked is they had one they said they did 🙂

They sung us a song called Jingle bells and we

sung them our Christmas song, our class 3/4B had

to go first our song we sung was called Rocking

around the Christmas tree. The other 3/4 class

sung their Christmas song called when Santa

was a boy. They also clapped for us Hehe, 🙂

After that we ended the call and started our

Celebration Day ! 🙂
